International Travel Team 2015 - Cambodia
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Cambodia is a very stable, youthful country with many Christian organizations and missionaries coming to proclaim the Gospel. Health risks are minimal, although there are recommended vaccinations and some malaria in rural areas (not our destination).
Project: 4 days of training (Mon.-Thurs. or Tues.- Fri.) approximately 25 youth and young adult leaders of Cambodian Lutheran (partner) church on sharing the Gospel. They are future leaders of Lutheran Church. Since not all speak English, we will be training through translators. I believe we could start from our 6 witnessing methods and make cultural adaptations (e.g, if door to door canvassing is not proper in their culture). For sure, LHM Cambodia is using puppet ministry, so that is a great training technique.
Bonus: worship with Cambodian Lutherans, touring LHM ministry center, sightseeing in and around Phnom Penh (Presidential Palace, craft and common markets, “Killing Fields” torture center and rural museum), possible side trip to Ankhor Wat temple ruins in Siem Riep.
Team size: proposed 8 members, 1-2 adult chaperones, 6-7 youth or college age, youth should be at least age 16 or above. I plan to go as one adult chaperone.
Dates: proposed after Summer Training in Kansas City, June 25 – July 5, or flexible according to team member needs.
Costs: approx. $2750 total: $1750 roundtrip airfare from Houston or Chicago (plus any airfare to Houston or Chicago), $500 in-country costs, $500 project costs (transportation, food and lodging for the Lutheran Church leaders attending training). Participants will need to fundraise in their local congregation or through family/friends to cover the cost of their attendance. We need to make a $400 down payment for project costs now, then the rest of the in-country/project money will be due about a month before we travel. Plane reservations will need to be paid when we reserve, about 5 months before travel.
