OAFC Alumnus Woody Keim Report on Hurricane Katrina damage in Louisiana

OAFC Alumni are invited to volunteer to serve.

November 20, 2007 Update

OAFC has made 2 attempts to send Travel Teams to Camp Restore in New Orleans. The 2006 team was stopped with vehicle problems, but the 2007 team was able to serve during the first week of July. OAFC Assistant to the Executive Director Dan Barz also made a personal trip with others from Southwest Michigan in November 2007. These 2007 pictures below show some of the needs and the work to be done over the coming years.

While one no longer sees mud and piles of cars shown in the first picture, many houses and apartments remain vacant and in need of repair.

Dear Friends,

The disaster is far from over...

I had a chance to tour many parts of the hurricane zone, last week. The scope of the damage is incomprehensible. There are hundreds of square miles of homes and businesses that are completely destroyed or so damaged that they will require bulldozing.

These are pictures from my Mom's house in Chalmette.  Her damage is typical of the damage in the New Orleans region.

I'm not sure if the media is still covering this nationally. I can't watch anymore. But, the story for them is likely over. They've moved on to the next disaster or scandal. I can tell you, the story is FAR from over here. There are hundreds of thousands of people who will not be able to come home. There will be no home in his region for most, for years to come.

It will take enormous amounts of money and vision to rebuild. So far, both are seriously lacking.  I have hope that the region can rebuild, but only with the support of the entire nation. Please encourage your churches to continue support and please keep us in your prayers.

Thanks,

Woody

Dan,

Please feel free to post the pictures and my email. [Woody Keim] My mission is, in my own way,  to keep this tragedy in the forefront of the nation. It will take many years to recover and even then, this region will never be the same.

It would be awesome to have your group or an alum group down here. [Write me, Dan Barz if interested in being part of an OAFC alumni work crew.] The amount of help that is needed is staggering. Check out www.tlcbr.org for updates on the relief efforts organized by my church in Baton Rouge.

It's great to hear from you!
